About Department

The Department Mechanical Engineering was one of the three branches started when BMS college of Engineering was established in 1946. In the past seven decades, the department has seen lot of progress in academics, research and consultancy activities. The department offers Three PG courses namely M.Tech in Machine Design, Manufacturing Science & Engineering and Thermal Engineering. The UG and two PG programs are granted academic autonomy by VTU in the year 2008 and 2016 respectively, which enabled to have our own curriculum to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes in students. The UG program is accredited for 5 years by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India under Tier-I (According to Washington Accord) w.e.f. 01.01.2014. One of the PG programs, Machine Design is also accredited for 5 years by NBA during 2018. Two PG programs are yet to be accredited by NBA.

In addition, the Department is recognized as a Research Center by VTU, QIP center by MHRD and also recognized as NDF Centre (only two institutions in Karnataka are recognized as NDF centers ) which has upgraded the Department to a research based learning centre. There has been wide spectrum of research activity in the last few years leading to more than 30 research publications in reputed journals annually. So far 23 candidates have completed their Ph.D. in the Research center and currently more than 45 candidates are pursuing Ph.D. and M.Sc (Engg.) in Research. All these have been accomplished due to the dedicated faculty, non-teaching staff and the support from the generous management. Department has highly qualified 54 faculty members. Out of 54, 32 faculty members have acquired Ph.D. from reputed universities of India and abroad. Many of the faculty members are serving as NBA evaluators and resource persons for technical training programs at the national level.

The department has the state-of-the-art infrastructure, with support from several funding agencies apart from the World Bank funded TEQIP and the ever encouraging management. The department has received external research funding from VTU, DST, AICTE in the recent years. In addition to research work, the department is actively involved in providing consultancy services to Private Sectors/Institutions.

A dedicated placement cell of the institute has been active in generating employment opportunities for the students. A large number of students are directly recruited by reputed companies through the placement cell. In addition, many students take up Higher studies in prestigious Universities in India and Abroad. The department also has a long network of distinguished alumni.

The department envisages strengthening the interactions with the Industry. The department constantly assures that quality technical education is imparted to the students and accomplishes excellence in curricular and co-curricular activities on par with the other prestigious institutes of the country.
