The department started in 1995 by the great visionary Late B S Narayan with an intake of 30. Subsequently in 2002 the intake is increased to 60. Currently the department runs two programs the first undergraduation in Chemical Engineering and second post-graduation in Biochemical Engineering with an intake of 24. The latter is started in 2013-14 academic year. 

In 2014, the undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering received 5 years accreditation from NBA, India in Tier-1 format. The autonomous undergraduate course takes it cognizance from the program specific criteria established in all reputed institute offering course in Chemical Engineering. The well balanced curriculum including the different subject area like Basic Sciences (BS), Engineering Sciences (ES), Professional Core (PC), Professional Electives (PE), Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and Project Work (PW). The graphical distribution of these subject areas is represented. 

 

  • Basic Science: The basic science sub division includes subjects like Engineering mathematics I & II, Engineering Physics, Biology for Engineers, C-programming, Basic Electrical, Electronics and Engineering Chemistry which provide a thorough grounding in fundamental sciences like physics, chemistry and mathematics.
  • Engineering Science: The engineering science sub division includes courses like elements of mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics, technical chemistry, elements of engineering drawing, statistics and probability, applied mathematics, elements of electronics, process engineering thermodynamics, material science and biomaterials, instrumental method of analysis and biochemical engineering. This class of courses will provide a thorough understanding of materials viz. their mechanical, electrical and thermal properties, thermodynamic factors influencing a process and kinetics of biochemical reactions with upstream and downstream processing technology.
  • Professional Core: The professional core sub-division includes courses are process principles and calculations, fluid mechanics, mechanical operations, heat transfer, mass transfer I and II, chemical reaction engineering I and II, transport phenomena, process control, chemical technology, chemical process equipment drawing, chemical equipment design, process equipment design and drawing, pollution control and management, process modelling and simulation and chemical plant utilities. The above listed courses provide an understanding of the principles of heat, momentum and mass transfer and their respective balances for different industrial processes. The basic design concepts of tall vertical vessels, vessel supports, vessel heads and types of storage vessels are taught to the students in the design. The reaction kinetics involving homogenous and heterogeneous reactions with constant and varying density states for different ideal and non-ideal reactor systems is dealt with in chemical reaction engineering I and II. Thus the graduate apprehends the industry more closely using various principles of momentum, heat, mass balances, design and interpretation of results through modeling and simulation for solving and optimizing the process flow chart for any chemical process industries with minimum experimental inputs using UNISIM simulation tool.  This division also provides an emphasis on the unit operations and unit processes involved to bring about modern innovations in chemical and allied industries. The critical importance of utilities and safety towards societal and environmental protection is imparted to the graduate.
  • Professional Elective: The professional elective category includes courses like numerical techniques in chemical engineering, computer interphase in chemical engineering, operational research , petroleum refining, polymer processing, nanomaterials and technology, food engineering, waste water treatment, interfacial science and composite materials  were graduates will learn modern methods to solve chemical engineering problems related to industries and will learn basic computer codes to solve different unit operations and process.
  • Project work: The project work has been subdivided into pre-project work and final project work. The will help the graduate to do the literature survey on current issues in chemical and allied industries and improve his knowledge about the present innovations. The graduate will choose a topic of his choice, do feasibility study in terms of economics and useful impact of the work. This will lead to the continuation of the work in the final project work. The graduates in their final project work will do the design of the experimental setup, conduct experiments, collect data, analyze and interpret the data obtained and present the results in the form of a thesis and seminar.
  • Humanities and social Sciences: This category includes courses like environmental engineering, economics for engineers, functional English, personality development& communication, Kannada language and constitution of India and professional ethics. These courses will improve the communication and presentation skills of the graduate by understanding the process conditions and also considering the safety, health and environmental hazards associated with the development of new process plant. 

The faculty members of the department are well qualified from premier institutions of the country. The domain expertise of the faculty members are diverse and in depth. The department is well equipped with state of the art laboratory in analytical techniques and Biochemical Engineering.

The department is a recognized research centre by VTU. All faculties actively pursue research in core-domain and in the allied Engineering science streams. The faculty research resulted in the Peer-Reviewed Journal publications, International Conference & National Conference proceedings. The Projects of our under graduate students are been from last 2 years are recognized as the best project works by IIChE Bangalore student chapter and B.M.S college of Engineering.

Program Specific Outcomes

The Program Specific Outcomes (PSO) of the department is decided after a series of meeting with the stake holders namely the Department Advisory Board (DAB), Board of Studies (BOS), Department Academic Committee (DAC) and all the faculty members.  The PSO's are  finally approved by the College Academic Council (AC).

The PSO s of Chemical Engineering  indicates the strength of the graduates from Chemical Engineering-BMSCE. The department has faculty members who are qualified from premier institutes of the country with varied domain expertise. This gives the strength to the department in the major areas of Chemical Engineering. Over the year numerous guest lectures were organized  for the students along with Value added courses in summer. The Value added courses were delivered by those companies who have MOU with the department.  Hence, the regional inclination needed from the employers are also been taken into consideration in imparting academic strengths to our graduates.
